AI interpretation versus human interpreters — which is right for you?
There are multiple artificial intelligence (AI) tools that can interpret spoken language. They work by converting speech in one language to text, translating the resulting text into another language, then converting the translation to speech.
Even though AI tools can give you a superficial understanding of conversations in foreign languages, they are not suitable in professional contexts.
Several studies prove it, including studies by the World Health Organization, Council of Europe, and AIIC Science Hub AI Workstream. Here are a few reasons not to use AI for professional interpretation:
- AI often struggles with cultural diversity because it is mostly trained on data from Western languages and cultures. This can lead to confusion or even cause offence in the language you’re translating your words into. This is especially true with non-Western languages.
- AI interpretation tools may be biased because they are trained on data that is itself biased, since it contains personal opinions, worldviews, cultural values, stereotypes, and so on. Using such tools in a professional multilingual, multicultural context is risky.
- AI tools pose a confidentiality risk. These tools collect, analyze, and use all the data that is fed into them — including sensitive and personal data.
- Whether in a professional, academic, or political setting, relationships between people are of paramount importance. Only human interpreters are able to correctly interpret the emotions, facial expressions, body language, or social and cultural context of the participants. These are precisely the elements that allow smooth communication between parties.
To decide whether AI tools are appropriate for your needs, consider the following 2 criteria:
- The complexity of the interaction: Are you happy to let a machine communicate your words and ideas for you when it has no understanding of all possible verbal and non-verbal cues?
- The associated risks: An interpretation mistake in a professional or geopolitical context can have serious repercussions for companies, people, and sometimes even a whole population.
What advantages do human interpreters have over AI?
To put it simply, interpretation involves so much more than simply switching spoken words from one language to another. Good interpreters convey the feeling, emotion, and relevance of a speaker’s words while simultaneously adapting them to the culture of the listener.
This is why professional interpretation requires a human interpreter.
My advantage over AI is that I can:
- quickly adapt to a changing situation, say a spike in tension, a misunderstanding, or a sense of unease
- step in to add further clarification if necessary
- create long-lasting ties
- present your message in a clear, coherent manner
- facilitate relationships through empathy and understanding
I do this by using the intonation of my voice, a pinch of humor at just the right moment, and an assurance that sets you and your participants at ease.
This is how I see my role as an interpreter: to give it my all so that I correctly and accurately convey the power of your words while retaining their meaning.
In my commitment to my role, I undertake to:
- uphold the ethical standards of my profession, which are to respect your message and keep it confidential ;
- stay neutral and impartial ;
- create a safe, productive space for you and your participants and listeners.
